Education and Training
I earned my B.A. in Painting and Ceramics from St. Johns University in Collegeville, MN. While in college I spent summers working for St. Joseph potter Jim Loso, who helped me develop a sense of design and balance.
Shortly after graduating college I moved to Minneapolis and began working at Grey Fox Pottery and Custon Ceramics in Arden Hills, MN. This employment provided the time, materials, and space to continue my work with clay. In recent years I have both taken and taught classes through the Norther Clay Center, and I started teaching at the Edina Art Center in 2008. I moved into the Q.arma Building that same year and have since maintained this basement studio in Minneapolis' Northeast Arts District. I currently share space with two other potters: Matthew Quinn and Anthony Huonder.
Most of my work is wheel thrown in white stoneware and finished in a high-fire gas kiln. Occassionally I experiment with wood, soda, or salt firings. My glazes are primarily matte and ash, sprayed for uniformity and layered complexity in coloration and surface. Function and tradition inspire most of my forms though the modern concepts of form and design are major considerations throughout my creative process.
